in my last vacation I spent most of the time to visit the OpenStack Summit in Vancouver. It's my 4th Summit and it's one of the best Summit. The bar is very high vor the upcoming event in Berlin.

After another year with work and usage of Ansible-OTC I want to share a project update and the vision for 2018.
- Role collection. There are a lots of roles in the Github Repo. This is good to show the work of OTC-API and for demonstration, but bad for overview and automation. I tried to collect functions following the CRUD standard into new roles. I.e. otc_ecs should Create, Read, Update, and Delete ECS resources on OTC: https://github.com/eumel8/ansible-otc/tree/dev/roles/otc_ecs
- Input-Handler. It was a good idea to use ini-files for configuration items, because it's good readable and easy to unterstand. Previously I used yml-files for the same function, other projects are using json. To split this function more from the Ansible roles I created different handlers for ini, yml and json, so the customer can choice: https://github.com/eumel8/ansible-otc/tree/dev/playbooks/vars
- Testing. Ansible developement goes really fast, so code can sometimes break because things aren't working anymore in newer versions of Ansible or Python. I started to play with Travis and included some functional tests: https://travis-ci.org/eumel8/ansible-otc
- Documentation. There are multiple Markdown files for use cases and role description. I switched to Sphinx, which is more portable and documentation is nearly to the code like the role documentation. A published version is on http://ansible-otc.readthedocs.io/en/dev/?badge=latest
As you can see the next release of Ansible-OTC will contain a lot of changes, so it will be easier to use OTC with Ansible.

Just another OpenStack Summit is started yesterday. It's one of the smaller events because it's far away in Australia ("only" 2300 attendees are registered), but 55% comes from APAC and if you imagine that 12 from 24 Gold Sponsors are coming from China then you can see how important is this area. The newest Gold Member and winner of the Super User Awards is Tencent Cloud.
People from 55 countries are together and Germany is already in the top 10.
What's new in OpenStack Community:
- Open Infrastructure Integration. Users of OpenStack interacting more and more within other projects beside OpenStack. The Foundation will pay attention on this fact and support collaboration with other communities and projects. At least the "BigTent" is going away, this was the idea to collect OpenStack core projects, but divided this to others.
- OpenLab Initiative. The user experience in multi-cloud and application frameworks should be improved. Among others Huawei and Open Telekom Cloud will pay attention on this topic
- Public Cloud Passport Program. The count of OpenStack deployments increased tremendously in the last months (following OpenStack User Survey +95% to 2016). Promoting this and start with collaboration is the goal of the Passport Program
- Financial Services is one of the newcomer in OpenStack Services. Check out the Lessons Learned session
- Contributor Portal. The idea starts at the PTG in Denver to invent a new landing page for contributors.
- Multi-Cloud/Edge-Computing are the next big things. Regarding the user survey nearly 48 % of the OpenStack user are interacting also with other clouds. 87 % believe that OpenStack is the right tool for Edge Computing
OpenStack is all about community. There are four steps for OpenSource integration:
- Find the common use case
- Collaborate across communities
- Build the required new technology
- Test everything end to end
This end-to-end responsibilty is really new. I believe this will change in the OpenStack community in the near future and a lot's of new projects will come in to have a share with the open-minded people and the experience of the last 7 years.

Long time ago (2015) I've started my OpenStack contributing process in OpenStack I18n team. The team is responsible for translating OpenStack dashboard, tools and documentation in other languages. One thing from the wishlist of the team was the Translation Check Site. And that was the biggest challenge for the team.

Open Telekom Cloud (OTC) is a public cloud service based on OpenStack powered by Deutsche Telekom. [1]
Sometimes people ask: is it OpenStack? Or not? The answer is: Of course, yes. No. Maybe. I'm afraid.
One thing is certain: #OTC #RunsOnOpenstack
Technology is provided by Huawei, one of the Top 4 contributor in OpenStack [2]. So you have core technology with slightly different services in OTC. Now there are different ways to connect to the cloud:

OpenStack Summit Boston
